I FEEL YOU. Been a designer (graphic design/art direction, now trying to get into UX) for about 20 years and im switching careers at 42 Y.O.! sometimes I wonder if Im sane for continue on this path.

❤ I also love your content. I love that you’re honestly saying how it is and not just using fluff, but I have a question. How did you find startups to work for because I know it’s easy to look and search for big companies but how did you find startups

Love the honesty, and I get it I work in retail now and it’s so repetitive but jumping into tech or a career that needs you to be updated and I for tends is a hill to climb but I am getting into tech now and I’m learning how to code( python) and even learning you XUI design as a phase because I’m realizing I come from a marketing program and I love marketing, but I also wanted to learn text so I can have double the skills but I understand when you said that sometimes you just wanna be left alone you don’t want to collaborate you don’t want to have to stay up-to-date. You just want a job that doesn’t strain your brain but since you’re in it, I do believe you made the right choice because in the long run, knowing and understanding tech, you will always have a job even during layoffs you will always be needed just like working as a data engineer a software engineer, marketing manager, those positions will always be needed❤️

Collaboration is definitely hard, so many people their own personal preference or end up just getting they way because they’ve outspoken the minority or they are in a higher position than you. Or when you have some that are fixated on a brand and want everything to follow their style regardless of what foundations you have set up.

I share the sentiment omg. I work as graphic designer in advertising agency and it was insane. The workload is insane, the deadline is insane and the expectation is unrealistic. Sometimes it makes me questioning my ability "Can I even do graphic design?" LOL

But being a Beautiful life partner is too easy🤗🎉

3:00 yeah my first contract role was with a design team, but every contract after has been where I was the only designer. Even in UX mature companies every corner of the company isn’t gonna have a UX team. I worked for Fidelity Investments and I was the sole designer more often than not. BUT, the plus side of being in a big company where there are teams, is you can network and attend group critiques. But these companies don’t hire as easily for junior roles. That’s the problem. A lot of mature IX companies are not hiring juniors, unless it’s an apprenticeship or internship

I resonate so much with being the only solo designer. I've been working as the solo UI/UX Designer in a mid-sized startup for almost a year now and it's a very isolating and depressing experience, especially in a low UX maturity company. I did not have anyone to bounce ideas off of which gives you a limited perspective. Most of the time, I was a bottleneck for everyone before they can do their work so I had to get designs done left and right so I'm not a blocker which led to poor work-life balance so I am constantly burnt out. While I have designed and launched a few of our products, I think it's been really setting me back in my career. If you're just coming out of bootcamp, I definitely don't recommend going this route.

Im think I need to figure out what I like to do. I’m interested in uxui, cybersecurity and data science. I’m much stronger at ux ui because I when to school for graphic design

Hi! I accidentally skipped step 8, which is interviewing. I look back and sometimes can’t believe I was able to survive interviewing for a career I had no experience in. What I did and still do today, is create an interviewing study guide that outlines everything about the company, the role, and mock questions I anticipate might be asked. Some example questions can even be found online depending on your industry. I also had 3-7 stories that summarizes why I wanted to change careers and how my previous job and skills seamlessly relate to the new one.

I agree I’m getting into UX. It as the only marketing manager are just in my marketing career I realize being the only marketing person they hire they like you to know every single aspect of marketing and not realizing that if we have a team, we can all bounce like this on each other by being a freelance and helping small brand, I understand, but when it comes to big companydefinitely should have someone you can collaborate with
